This is great; really progressive and exciting.
Nice to see the use of the shield, the chair and two people against one (amongst other things).
Doing it on the hard wooden floor, too!
This is no doubt a great way to test and build our minds for combat, and develop some good reactions and skills;
but like any sparring or sport competition, we have to be aware of the limitations.
Everyone's 'holding back', really (otherwise you get serious injuries even deaths).
These type of sporting contests are more or less 'MMA with weapons and a fencing mask', aren't they?
I'm not disparaging them in any way whatsoever;
it takes guts and a real fighting mentality to do anything like this,
and sparring/fighting can no doubt help us develop ourselves and our methods towards 'the real world'.

For my aims (which are identifying ways for myself and others to guard against and survive criminal assault), I need to keep it at the forefront of my mind how I'd operate without a mask against a metal weapon, weilded by someone who may well kill me and could have accomplices close by.
Taking hits or going to the floor may happen (it's a fight, after all),
but the reality of that happening 'outside the training hall' could be quite different and must be avoided as if you're life depends on it (because it really could).

You quite likely won't get a second chance if someone really means it,
and any habits and approaches we develop to facing weapons should take into the account the perilous and unforgiving nature of reality.

Test ourselves in limited combat, but realise that those aches and bruises we wear with pride the next day, could mean broken bones and even death in a robbery or beating.

--------

For me, always referring back to past experiences of where I've seen weapons used in street fights (not nice) and watching footage of serious assaults, murders and weapon fights (not nice either, but at least you don't smell the blood or get it on you...) gives the essential 'point of reference' and reality check.
For all you HEMA folk, keep at the front (not the back) of your mind that stabbing, crushing and hacking body parts beyond repair is the nature of a REAL 'historical' (or modern) weapons fight.... Emoticono wink

ps. Kudos to the guys in the video above.   :)
